MYAirline: The future of Malaysian Aviation

October 22, 2022

The future of Malaysia's aviation is coming. Malaysia's newest airline- MYAirline, has received their Air Operators Certificate recently, and is gearing up to start operations soon. In this article, we will learn more about this brand-new airline.

Before we take a dive into MYAirline, let's take a look into Malaysia's currently operating airline. Malaysia currently has 4 major airlines- AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, and Batik Air Malaysia.

AirAsia is the main low-cost carrier in Asia, and has been voted the world's best budget airline by Skytrax. They are the main competitor for MYAirline.

Malaysia Airlines is the flag carrier of Malaysia, and is a full-service carrier. The airline has a subsidiary, Firefly, which operates short-haul low-cost domestic flights within Malaysia, and only has 3 international destinations- Singapore, Phuket and Banda Aceh.

The final airline is Batik Air Malaysia, previously known as Malindo Air. The airline is a subsidiary of Lion Air/ Batik Air Indonesia. It operates all around the region, even as far as Australia.

Now, let's start on MYAirline. On 11 January 2021, MYAirline was founded, and placed 2 orders for Airbus A320-200 aircraft. Just a few weeks ago, on 27 September 2022, the airline received its Air Operator Certificate, enabling it to begin operations in Malaysia.

As of now, the airline has received 1 of its A320 aircraft, and is planning to launch flights on a proposed route from Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 2 (klia2), its headquarters, to Kota Kinabalu. It has already performed some terminal operation testing at KLIA. The airline aims to have cheaper tickets than AirAsia, their competition by having an ultra-low-cost business model. Within the next 5 years, the airline aims to have a fleet of over 50 aircraft, and expand internationally, likely starting with Singapore and Indonesia.
