Japan Airlines Clinches Order For 42 New Aircraft

March 21, 2024

TOKYO, 21 MAR | Japan Airlines today has placed a highly-speculated order for a grand total of 42 new aircraft. This brand-new order consists of 21 Airbus A350-900s, 11 A321neo aircraft and 10 Boeing 787-9s.

This is in addition to 18 A350-900 jets, of which one (JA13XJ) was written off as a hull loss in January this year following a collision on ground. The new A321neos are also JAL's first Airbus narrowbody jets to enter their fleet so far, together with 42 Boeing 737-800NG and 21 upcoming Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets in 2026. Furthermore, the order for 10 Dreamliners will bring JAL's B787 fleet up to 55.

The new 787s and A350s will focus on growing North America, India, and other places in Asia. While JAL currently operates the A350 domestically, but will soon fly internationally following this new order.

This comes after Reuters reported that Japan Airlines was in talks for two dozen aircraft earlier this week.
